Zumba® Workout:  Tips for the Beginners

Zumba is one of the easiest workouts to learn. You do not need any background in dance or fitness to get started. The most important thing is to stop finding reasons not to exercise. Many women tend to say “I am not coordinated ” , ” I am not fit enough”, “I have two left feet” etc. None of those reasons should stop you from attending Zumba class. Attending your classes will increase your confidence in yourself and your attitude will change from “I can’t”, to “Yes, I can and I will”.  So, check our schedule and come.

Getting Started with Zumba Classes and Exercise

You may choose to watch a session or two first before joining, although most individuals can easily catch up even if they’ve seen and joined Zumba for the first time. It might help you to watch Zumba DVD to get familiar with steps and music.  It is advisable to wear comfortable clothes suitable for a workout. Wear comfortable running shoes or court/dance shoes that have the round pivot point on the ball of the foot.  Due to twisting motion that is prevalent in Zumba classes, you should avoid exercising on carpet.

Your Approach Towards Zumba Training

Join the Zumba class with a cheerful attitude. Listen and enjoy the music and do not focus on worrying about how you look, how well you follow the steps etc. Zumba classes are not about perfection nor trying to impress anyone. It is purely about enjoying yourself.  To add to the fun, feel free to bring along some friends.

How Intense are Zumba Classes?

Zumba classes typically last for 1 hour. Song of various intensity are played with minimal or no break (unless needed to explain some steps of give instructions specific to the situation). We go through approximately 13 songs per class. Some songs are fast paced while others are slower. Zumba is about interval training so there will be opportunity to slow down and ‘rest’ during each song by decreasing intensity of the moves. You are also in control of the intensity by moving stronger of toning your movement down as you feel comfortable. During a 1 hour Zumba class, you can burn anywhere between 450 to 800 calories. Impressive, eh?
